“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.”
Romeo & Juliet Act II, scene ii verse 1-2
Foxnews is reporting that a Dutch Bishop, just weeks shy of retiring, has called for all Christians worldwide to refer to God as Allah. His intentions were such that by calling God Allah we might be able to foster interfaith dialogs with each other. Many Catholics are calling for the head of this Bishop without understanding where he is coming from at all.
Bill Donohue of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights said of the Bishops statements, “Bishop Martinus ‘Tiny’ Muskens can pray to Allah all he wants, but only addlepated Catholics will follow his lead, it is not a good sign when members of the Catholic hierarchy indulge in a fawning exchange with Muslims, or those of any other religion.” This is just prime example of stupidity within Catholicism when it comes to religion. The word Allah is Arabic meaning God, it is used by all monotheist Arabs. Our word God comes from the Germanic word Gott, also simply meaning God. The Latin word is Deus, meaning God. The Jews call God Yaweh, again nothing more than a generic name meaning God. Whether one wants to call God by anyone of these names should not matter. As long as one does not use a proper name for a false deity all should be ok (names such as Zeus, Jupiter, Apollo and the like.) Christians call God Jesus often times, despite the fact Jesus is merely a distinct person within the Blessed Trinity. We need to remember that God gave us his name, and his name is “I Am” (Exodus 3:14.)
Our misunderstandings are not on a theological basis, but on a diction basis. We don’t understand the meaning of the word Allah and as a result think it is a theological difference, but in fact is only a difference on the diction level. No two languages call God by the same title. English speakers call him God, Arabs call him Allah, Spanish speakers call him Dios, the French call him Dieu, the Italians call him Dio, the Dutch call him de God, the Portuguese word is Deus, the Russian word is Бог, the Norwegian word is Gud, and God in Japanese is Kami. These words are all different but that does not detract from the fact that they all mean the same thing. We put a different meaning behind the word Allah that does not really exist for that word. A Christian, Jew, or Muslim should be allowed to use language’s word for God as long as they understand it to be theologically the same as what other Christians mean when they say God.
This is an example of ignorant Christians who want to make more differences between Christianity and Islam so that they can justify their hatred of this religion. It has been Christianity that has caused the birth of Radical Islam. Christians wishing to remain ignorant of other religions have caused religious strife over the last 2,000 years.
